How to Sell on Poshmark and Make Money

Are you eager to clear closet clutter and earn some extra cash? Or maybe you’re  looking for a practical side hustle that doesn’t require any startup fees. If any of these situations seem fitting then just know that this guide has been created for you!

What is Poshmark?

Poshmark is a social marketplace platform in which users can buy and sell new and secondhand items including clothing, shoes, jewelry, beauty and wellness goods, homegoods, electronics, and more! There are over 80 million users in the United States and a large audience of community members looking to shop!

How to Get Started on Poshmark

Download the app and create a free profile. Poshmark will curate your style by asking which brands you like.

Next, customize your profile (called a closet) by entering personal details, uploading a profile photo, and creating a shirt bio. Once you’ve completed your closet profile you will be able to start listing!

How to Create a Listing

To create a listing click ‘sell’. It will them prompt you to either take a photo or upload photos. You will have the option to edit those photos by cropping, rotating, adding a filter, or adjusting the brightness, contrast, vibrance, and sharpness.

Next, There will be some information that you will need to fill out about your item. The first field will be the title field. You want to be sure to state what your item is and include key details such as the brand, size, and color.

You will then fill out the description box for your item. In this field you will want to be as descriptive as possible describing the brand, size, color, material, measurements, condition, or any pertinent information regarding your item. Providing as many details as possible will ensure that your buyer knows what they are getting and prevent any returns. This section could also make it or break it for a sale because a potential buyer may be looking for certain specifications for an item. Leaving out important information could potentially forfeit a sale because the buyer may continue on without inquiring about the missing information. Once you have completed this section click ‘done’.

The following few fields will prompt you for a category, quantity, size, brand, color, whether it’s new or not, and style tags. Style tags can be useful in boosting your listings visibility. You can choose up to three that fit your item. I recommend adding all three if possible.

The final fields that you will need to fill out are the pricing and discounted shipping fields. If you have the original price, enter this. If you do not, enter ‘0’. You will then enter your listing price. Be sure to take into consideration the condition, brand, demand, ect. when setting this price. I highly recommend researching the exact item prior to setting your price. This will give you an idea of what the item is selling for or what it has sold for. Be sure to give yourself some wiggle room for offers. You will have the option to offer discounted shipping but keep in mind that any discount will be deducted from your earnings.

And there you have it! Your listing is ready to be posted. You’re on your way to earning some cash!

Poshmark Fees

While it’s always free to list on Poshmark, there are fees that will be deducted after your item sells. Be sure to factor these fees into your price. For any sales under $15, there is a flat fee of $2.95. For any sale $15 or more, there will be a 20% fee.

Be sure to factor fees into your pricing.

Tips and Tricks to Maximize Your Earnings

1. Be as descriptive as possible. I know that I mentioned this above but it is so important in order to increase your chances of a sale and a happy buyer!

2. Take good photos. Use a mannequin, lay the item flat, or hang the piece. (I prefer to use a command hook and a hanger on a plain white background for most of my clothing items.) Natural lighting is best but you can also use a ring light, a soft box, or camera settings to be sure that your lighting is clean and crisp. Be sure to take photos at all different angles and include any flaws, tags, details, and measurements if you are able. Make sure the background is clean and not distracting. A white background is ideal as it minimizes distractions. Google also prefers white backgrounds due to simplicity, professional quality, and lack of distractions. Your photos will automatically be uploaded in square mode on Poshmark so I recommend having the photos shot in this mode.

3. Send offers to likers. You’ve already left yourself some wiggle room when pricing your item. This can come in handy now. Be sure to send offers to all likers and users who create a bundle of your items.  Include a shipping discount if you are able. Buyers love discounts!

4. Stay active in the Poshmark Community. Sharing items from your closet helps increase visibility in your followers’ feeds, improves your ranking in search results, and can expose you to new users. Share other users’ listings and, because of Posh etiquette, they may share yours back also increasing your listing exposure.

5. Take advantage of Posh Parties. These themed parties allow you to share items from a particular category or theme. Sharing to these parties increases your exposure and gives you the opportunity for more followers.

6. Relist your items every 60 days. This can increase your visibility and attract more buyers.
